Vocal feminization can feel like a struggle on your own. You might be thinking to yourself, “does fem voice training actually work?” And I don’t blame you! There are so many videos and resources out there to go through. It’s hard to go through everything and figure out what will work for you on your way to your new voice.

Working one-on-one with a teacher or SLP can be helpful. But gender affirming voice sessions are not always covered by your insurance. And if you’re paying out of pocket for a teacher, it can be expensive.

Below are the top 5 reasons why group training for vocal feminization might be for you!

1. It’s Great For Beginners

If you’re brand new to voice training, signing up for a group class can be a great place to start.

How many times have you gone through video after video, post after post, trying to make sense of it all? In a group class, you have access to exercises and assignments that help you target your goal voice. Vocal feminization can seem overwhelming. But in a group class, you get information laid out for you in an easy-to-follow program.

When you follow along with instructional videos on YouTube, it can be hard to tell if you’re doing exercises correctly. But in group classes, you get personalized feedback from the instructor. It’s so helpful to have a professional there to guide you, especially as you’re getting started.

2. It’s Budget-Friendly

The reality is, private gender affirming voice sessions don’t work for so many people because of the cost.

Group training is an affordable way to get all the same information that you’d get in a private session setting. We all want our money to go a long way, and this is a great way to make that happen.

3. You can connect with new friends

Voice train together

No one likes to feel alone. Especially if you’re embarking on a brand new journey like voice training. But vocal modification doesn’t need to be so serious! A lively atmosphere like a group class is a great place to connect with new friends and have fun.

Going through a process like this together can be a bonding experience.

In a group setting, you also get to learn from other people, not just the instructor. Other group members might ask the same questions that you have, but are nervous to ask. Or they might have questions that you might not have thought of. And you can get insight into how your friends think about different exercises, which can help you, too.

4. Group Training Keeps You Accountable

How many times have you decided to change something in your life and not followed through?

It happens to all of us. Because without structure and accountability, it’s easy to let things slide.

But if you have buddies that have the same goals, they can help you stay motivated.

It’s awesome to be able to train with other people who are going through the same things as you are. And when you know someone is counting on you to show up for your weekly sessions, you’re less likely to blow it off.

Group training also offers structure in the classes. You can’t cancel and put if off - you have a set time and date that you’ve committed to.

5. Zoom in from Anywhere

learn from home

Online lessons bring people together who live in different areas.

You might live in a rural area where you don’t have access to gender affirming voice lessons. Or you might simply find that taking lessons from the comfort of your own home is what is most comfortable for you.

Zoom sessions can also be super convenient. Avoiding traffic is definitely a perk!

The thing is, there is no quick fix in voice training. There’s no getting around putting in the practice time.

The benefits of Gender Affirming Voice Group Training are:

  • Great structure for beginners

  • Low cost

  • Connection with friends

  • Keeps you accountable

  • Zoom in from anywhere

There are so many reasons to give group training a try! With structure, accountability, and motivation, vocal feminization is possible!

What to Expect in Gender Affirming Voice Group Classes

Group classes are 6 weeks long, with one hour sessions once per week. In each session, we go through a warm up together, then learn about a new aspect of voice training. After the lesson portion is over, there’s practice time. During that time, you are able to practice the material with the instructor or with a partner.

Each week, you receive handouts on each topic with homework assignments for practice. As we go, we combine the different areas we've studied. At the end of the class, you'll feel confident that you can continue working on your own.

In my group classes, we’ll go through:

I hope this was helpful, and I hope to see you in class soon!
