Trans Voice: Breathing Exercises

breath for vocal feminization

Relaxed breath flow is essential for vocal feminization. It can eliminate strain, help you to maintain your pitch, and keep your voice easy and natural.

If you’re struggling to maintain your pitch, feel vocal strain, or feel like your voice doesn’t quite have the natural quality you’re looking for, breath management can help!

Try the 4 exercises below to work on your breath!

  1. Lay flat on your back and feel the rise and fall of your breath in your belly.

  2. Sitting up, place a hand on your low abdomen. As you breathe in, gently release the lower abdominal muscles and allow the breath to come in naturally, as you did when you were lying down. Watch out for motion or tension in your shoulders or chest. Try to relax this area and focus your movement in your belly. Exhale as though you are blowing out a candle, and feel your lower abdomen gently pull in towards your spine. Repeat 5 times.

  3. Take a low abdominal breath in, and and breathe out on an “ss” sound. Repeat 5 times.

  4. Put your straw into a cup of water, a few inches full. Take a low, deep breath and exhale through your straw into the water, blowing bubbles. Keep the bubbles even. Repeat 5 times.
