How to Use Nasal Sounds for Vocal Feminization

Nasal sounds for forward resonance

“Mm”, “nn”, and “ng” are nasal sounds. What does that mean??

That means the sound is traveling through your nasal cavity instead of your mouth.

So how does it work?

Your soft palate, or velum, which is the soft tissue at the back of the top of your mouth is the doorway into the nasal cavity. Your soft palate and nasal cavity are parts of the vocal tract, which affects resonance. When your soft palate is lifted, the door is closed, and no sound (or food or drink) can travel into the nasal cavity. When your soft palate is lowered, your sound can travel through the nasal cavity.

Nasal sounds can help with vocal feminization because they bring our attention to the forward, buzzy feeling in our noses. By getting used to that feeling, you can much more easily find your bright resonant sound.
